THE VIEWING WALL AT GROUND ZERO: PHASE TWO
The second phase of the Viewing Wall was completed in September 2003. The Liberty Street side of the site has 17 history panels that picture the evolution of lower Manhattan from colonial times through the Twin Towers in a series of maps, skyline views, historic photographs, and postcards.
Because of a problem with graffiti, the original Church Street panels were removed in the spring of 2003. They were remade, then mounted higher, on the upper zone of the Viewing Wall, as were all the new panels, to discourage vandalism. There are 15 history panels on the Church Street side, including several that illustrate the Singer Tower, tallest building in the world in 1908, which stood on the west side of Church Street at Liberty, and the Hudson Terminals Building, the world's largest buildings in 1909, which were demolshed to build the World Trade Center.
