3) WHAT IS A JUMBO?

Which were the largest skyscrapers through history, measured by their interior space? For this exhibition we have established the categories Jumbo and Super Jumbo to describe the biggest buildings of a period. Jumbos contain twice the area of the average big building. Super Jumbos are double the size of Jumbos. As skyscrapers have grown both taller and bulkier over the decades, the thresholds have risen:

Period

1880-1900
1900-1920
1920-1950
1950-2000

Jumbos

> 250,000 ft2
> 500,000
> 1,000,000
> 2,000,000

Super Jumbos

> 500,000
> 1,000,000
> 2,000,000
> 4,000,000

To be considered a high-rise, a building must be taller than a cube.

What is the system for the Jumbo Methodology?
