MIDTOWN MANHATTAN

The light purple buildings are Jumbo Buildings. They were built about 80 years ago, in the 1920s, near Grand Central Terminal on 42nd Street. This was the first time this area had any major skyscrapers.

The dark purple buildings are Super Jumbos. You can see one of them -- The Empire State Building -- on the far right hand side of the picture. These buildings created many new offices for people to go and work during the day. They have an area of over two and a half million square feet.

Lots of buildings were built in the 1950s, or fifty years ago. They are colored in brown, but you can see that they are not as large as the five red Jumbo buildings, which were also built around the same time.

It's true, New York isn't the only city with skyscrapers. Chicago, Illinois has plenty of its own to brag about.
