The Skyscraper Museum is devoted to the study of high-rise building, past, present, and future. The Museum explores tall buildings as objects of design, products of technology, sites of construction, investments in real estate, and places of work and residence. This site will look better in a browser that supports web standards, but it is accessible to any browser or Internet device.
The tendency in the newest buildings has been to develop condominiums -- apartments purchased by the residents -- rather than rental units. This is the model at One River Terrace, as well as the 35 story Millennium Tower Residences designed by Handel Architects for Millennium Partners, which is rising just north of the Museum. This switch to offering ownership rather than rental units suggests that "green" has become an attractive sales feature.
The last commercial site in Battery Park City, just north of World Financial Center, is being developed as the Goldman Sachs New World Headquarters, a 43-story, 1.6 million sq. ft. tower designed by Pei Cobb Freed and Partners. Now under construction, the Goldman Sachs building is expected to win Gold LEED certification when completed in 2009-10.
