A hotel-and-office in-a-garden, ParkRoyal on Pickering investigates green intensification in a dense metropolis. Rather than a city of objects, the building suggests a city of environments. Its ‘Topographic Architecture’ podium is designed as a land form for landscape that visually extends the green of the adjacent public park vertically into the building. Facilitating the public life of the city, the hotel’s porte-cochere opens up as a gateway that physically and visually links Singapore’s business and historical districts. A large ‘Multiple Ground Level’ on the podium roof serves as a publicly accessible ‘Tropical Community Space’ that is sheltered by the towers above. ‘‘Sky Gardens’‘ are placed on cantilevered landscaped shelves every 4 floors, framing views from guest rooms, providing shade, and creating a human-scaled ‘Domesticated Megastructure’. The project is awarded with Green Mark Platinum - Singapore’s highest sustainable rating. Its high Green Plot Ratio and Civic Generosity rating provides downtown Singapore with a ‘High- Density, High-Amenity’ city block.
