Manhattan Timeformations
The Skyscraper Museum

The Skyscraper Museum is devoted to the study of high-rise building, past, present, and future. The Museum explores tall buildings as objects of design, products of technology, sites of construction, investments in real estate, and places of work and residence. This site will look better in a browser that supports web standards, but it is accessible to any browser or Internet device.

MANHATTAN TIMEFORMATIONS

Manhattan Timeformations, a digital project by architect Brian McGrath with designer Mark Watkins, maps Manhattan's skyscraper districts through time.

LAUNCH TIMEFORMATIONS

The project uses computer models and interactive animations to depict the dynamic relationship between Manhattan's skyscrapers and other layers of urban information such as geologic formation, settlement patterns, landfill, transportation and communications infrastructure, zoning laws and real estate cycles. The project was completed December 2000, and will eventually be on view at the museum's permanent home in Battery Park City.

To make the project accessible and informative, in 2000 the museum invited the public to view the model and to participate in discussion sessions with the project's key designers. Sessions were:

Wednesday + Thursday afternoons 1 - 3 pm:
June 8, 14, 21, 29 | July 13, 20, 26 | Aug. 2

Wednesday + Thursday evenings 6 - 8 pm:
June 22, 28 | July 19, 27

Saturday afternoons 1 - 3 pm:
June 10, 17, 24 | July 15, 22, 29

All sessions were free and took place at The Skyscraper Museum's temporary gallery, located on Maiden Lane between Water and Pearl Streets, just two blocks south of South Street Seaport. The space has been generously donated by Rudin Management Company. Subway: 2/3 or 4/5 to Wall Street; 2/3, 4/5 or J/M/Z to Fulton Street; or A/C to Broadway-Nassau. For further information please call 212-968-1961.

This project is made possible with public funds from a Technology Initiative Grant from the New York State Council on the Arts, a State Agency.
