The Skyscraper Museum is devoted to the study of high-rise building, past, present, and future. The Museum explores tall buildings as objects of design, products of technology, sites of construction, investments in real estate, and places of work and residence. The American Can Company was formed in 1901 when 60 companies representing 123 factories, consolidated to produce 90% of the tin cans in the U.S. The 130,000 sq ft complex was built on the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn in 1865 with numerous additions through 1901, and includes four-, five-, and six-story buildings in a red brick Renaissance Revival style. Details include a corbelled brick cornice, large diamond windows, pilasters, and segmental- and round-arch windows with projecting brick lintels. Stone floor bands accent the story and mid-story divisions. In the 1920s the company built a six-story section. X� Projects transformed the building into a curated community of artists and light manufacturers, creating a vibrant cultural and industrial complex for the new "makers" economy.
