The Skyscraper Museum is devoted to the study of high-rise building, past, present, and future. The Museum explores tall buildings as objects of design, products of technology, sites of construction, investments in real estate, and places of work and residence. Nowhere does the clich� about skyscrapers being an expression of oversized ambition play out so credibly as in Dubai, a city state with five topped out supertalls-the most of any city in the world. With a population of only about 1.4 million and no oil of its own, in the 1990s Dubai began to position itself as the financial, commercial, and recreation center for the Gulf region. Over-the-top real estate ventures, such as the artificial Palm Islands, drove the economy. Many separate clusters of skyscraper development were constructed at once, including the skyline of Sheikh Zayed Road , Downtown Dubai, with Burj Khalif as the centerpiece, and Dubai Marina, with its dense cluster of supertalls. The pencil-thin towers illustrated at the left, part of the Dubai Marina development, are unusual for supertalls in being all-residential buildings.
